Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a specialised treatment we use to manage both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. The shockwave is an intense, short energy wave that travels faster than sound and is generated from the shockwave machine outside the body.
ESWT was first devised as a non–surgical option to break down kidney stones. It was during these treatments that ESWT was found to have beneficial effects on surrounding tissues, leading researchers to apply the shockwave principle to other parts of the body. Many years and a lot of detailed research years later, it has been found to have many beneficial effects.
At Allegro we use ESWT to specifically treat common musculoskeletal conditions including:
Heel spurs / plantar fasciitis - see our blog: Causes & Treatment of Heel Pain
Achilles tendonitis
Calf muscle tears
Hamstring and quad muscle tears or contusions (corks)
Knee bursitis and tendonitis
Knee ligament strains
Tennis and golfer’s elbow
Dupuytren’s contractures
Shoulder bursitis and calcific tendonitis
Rotator cuff tears
Hip bursitis
Gluteal muscle tears
CRPS (Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome)
For optimal effect, treatment usually requires 3-6 sessions spaced 5-10 days apart.
It’s normal to have some mild tenderness and possible bruising for 24-48 hours post-treatment, but other side effects are rare.
You do not need a referral to receive Shockwave Therapy.
